Playing nice: the new sincerity
Why board games and bowling signify the triumph of sincerity over irony
The participation-required fun that I had despite myself at The Ballroom will be on offer when a Toronto location of the ping-pong club SPiN opens, near The Ballroom, this summer. Already established is Snakes & Lattes, the “board game café” in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood. Games and sports-lite activities such as bowling, ping-pong, darts and pool have always been part of the suburban experience for kids and their parents, but following an extended cultural moment of what’s been called “the new sincerity” reacting to and replacing irony, an earnest — and nerdy — way of socializing is now downtown-approved.
