GeoPollster and the National Post partner for upcoming Canadian election

The National Post has partnered with GeoPollster to conduct a social experiment in the run-up to the upcoming Canadian federal election on May 2. Foursquare users can register their accounts with GeoPollster Canada. Each checkin will count as a “vote” for their preferred political party.
A GeoPollster Canada page on the National Post site will track the votes by province, city and venue. Each party will have an opportunity to “seize control” of each of those divisions, giving people an idea of where the party stands — at least amongst foursquare users.

Nerd Mobile Mayors across the country spread out to check-in for their party and colonize commercial and non-commercial establishments so as to colour the map and win not only the game, but possibly the nation. Silly, but somewhat neat if enough people actually choose to play. An accurate poll needs a sample of what, a thousand? What does a Foursquare election require? How many ridings will dominated by a couple of mayors, or none at all?

Check in and let’s find out - it’s an experiment on our part. And just like voting, your political preference remains anonymous unless you choose to reveal it.

It’s the go-to question for pollsters come campaign time. But with most traditional polls conducted by cold-calling random Canadians on landline telephones, it’s also a question that only a very few of us will ever get a chance to answer. It got us at the National Post thinking: What would polling data look like if anyone with a smartphone could answer that same question, anytime they wanted?
