Ukrainian zookeeper to spend five weeks living in lion enclosure
A Ukrainian zookeeper plans to spend five weeks living in an enclosure with two lions to raise funds for the zoo.
Alexander Pylyshenko, who entered the lions’ enclosure on Tuesday, said he plans to spend the next 35 days painting pictures of the lions which he will sell to raise money for new buildings.
“I hope that my attitude and the optimism with which I approach this project will be understood by people,” he said in a statement on the zoo’s website. (Photo: Gleb Garanich/Reuters)
Zoo euthanizes white lioness due to cancerous growths
The Toronto Zoo has euthanized its white lioness, Nokanda, after she apparently developed cancerous tumours. The “very beautiful big cat” was 15.
“It’s hard, but it’s the cycle of life,” said senior vet Graham Crawshaw. “We have animals being born and animals dying as they get older, just like as with your own pets it can be hard,” he said. “There was nothing we would have been able to treat her with.”
