Andy Murray sends home Roger Federer at Australian Open
Andy Murray has finally beaten Roger Federer at a Grand Slam. U.S. Open champion Murray stayed in the hunt for a second consecutive major with a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 win Friday over the 17-time major champion at the Australian Open.
Murray, who served for the match at 6-5 in the fourth set, will play defending champion and top-seeded Novak Djokovic, who was rarely troubled while beating David Ferrer in straight sets in just under 90 minutes on Thursday night, about 2 1/2 hours less than Friday’s semi-final. Williams hurt her back in the eighth game of the second set, hampering her serve. She had treatment and recovered well enough to give herself a shot at winning the match, but the 19-year-old Stephens kept her composure in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory on Wednesday.
It was the first loss since Aug. 17 for the 15-time Grand Slam winner, ending a run of 20 consecutive wins. She hadn’t lost a match at a Grand Slam tournament since the French Open, where her first-round exit sparked a resurgence in the second half of 2012 that included titles at Wimbledon, the London Olympics, the U.S. Open and the WTA Championship.

The world No. 1 beat former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic 6-0, 7-5 in the last match Sunday night. Wozniacki is set to face Kim Clijsters in the quarter-finals.
“My confidence is high, my fitness is good, my play is improving and I’m very positive,” Wozniacki said. “If I play like I did today, Kim will have to really play well to beat me.”

Nadal vs. Federer
At this year’s Australian Open, No. 2-ranked Nadal and No. 3-ranked Federer find themselves on the same side of the draw for the first time at a major since the 2005 French Open. If they were to meet, it will not be until the semi-finals.
Still, that did not stop Nadal from creating a bit of a buzz heading into the tournament by criticizing Federer for staying quiet on Tour issues because it might tarnish his reputation. Photo: Mark Blinch/Reuters
