Gates to Beatles’ landmark Strawberry Fields are being replaced
When most people hear the Beatles song Strawberry Fields Forever they probably think of the Central Park shrine to John Lennon. But the real inspiration for the hit came from a Salvation Army children’s home in the Liverpool, England, suburb of Woolton. Lennon played at the centre as a child and it has since become a pilgrimmage destination for Beatles fans and Lennonites the world over.
The original Strawberry Fields building was torn down in the 1970s and the replacement facility was closed in 2005. So it has just been the storied, 100-year-old gates — a place for fans to scrawl lyrics, messages and their names — that have been holding down the Strawberry Fields Forever fort.
