How a Manitoba woman allegedly duped an NBA star and his 17-year-old love interest in extortion scheme
On the Internet, nobody knows you are a Manitoban.
This is among the hard truths recently learned by an National Basketball Association star whose reputation was nearly ruined by a police raid on his house in a child pornography investigation, but who has now emerged as the victim of a staggeringly complex online extortion scheme perpetrated by a woman from a tiny town near the north end of Lake Winnipeg.
There are “numerous” other victims of the impersonation scam, colloquially known as “catfishing,” in which a person poses online as a love interest, says a lawyer briefed on the continuing cross-border police investigation. More charges are expected soon in Colorado.
Shelly Lynn Chartier, 29, of Easterville, Man., is free on bail, but will return to court Oct. 22 to face charges of possessing and transmitting child pornography, personation, extortion and uttering threats.
Her alleged victim is Chris Andersen, 35, known as Birdman, a luridly tattooed and mohawked centre, who once served a two-year suspension for violating the NBA’s drug policy and recently won the NBA championships with the Miami Heat, having played for the Denver Nuggets.
“I want my name back,” he said, according to his lawyer, Mark Bryant. The last two years have been “absolutely harrowing.” (Photo: AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)
